Supply access to clean, safe water and help alleviate poverty
for tens of thousands of people in Ethiopia and Zambia

Who is Oxfam?

Oxfam America is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. As part of Oxfam International, an alliance of 13 Oxfams that work with individuals and local groups in more than 120 countries, Oxfam America saves lives, helps people overcome poverty, and fights for social justice.

Why Oxfam?

Access to safe, clean drinking water remains one of the world’s top development priorities. Oxfam is the world leader in providing water and sanitation to poor and vulnerable people, especially in humanitarian crises resulting from natural disasters or armed conflict.

Oxfam has provided access to safe, clean drinking water for millions of people in the developing world by working in more than 120 countries – particularly in such African countries as Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Angola. However, there is much more work that needs to be done. In remote areas of Africa, as many as 85% of people still lack access to safe drinking water. The harsh reality is:
  • 1.1 billion people around the world don’t have a safe water supply.
  • About 2 million people in developing countries die each year from diseases associated with lack of access to clean water.
  • 4,000 to 6,000 children die every day from water-related diseases.
  • A child born in the developed world consumes 30 to 50 times as much water as one in the developing world.

What can we accomplish together?

Oxfam America, Oxfam Great Britain, and eBay Foundation have formed a unique partnership so that together with the eBay Community we can address the critical shortage of clean, safe water resources in the developing world. Your donation will be used to help bring clean water and sanitation to rural areas in Zambia and Ethiopia. The partnership will provide access to new, safer water supplies through the development of sink wells and boreholes, upgrades to existing water sources, latrines for communities and schools, and training on how to manage the equipment and sustain the water supplies. This partnership will improve the lives of tens of thousands of people in Zambia and Ethiopia.
