What is the Community Gives campaign?
The Community Gives campaign helps create good in the world by inspiring people to contribute together to causes that matter. eBay Foundation is donating $1 million to three worthy nonprofit organizations and is asking the eBay Community to join in. For each Community member who contributes to the nonprofits during the campaign, eBay Foundation will donate an additional dollar, up to $100,000. Imagine what we can do when we all give together.
What is eBay Foundation?
In 1998, with a donation of pre-IPO stock, eBay Inc. established the eBay Foundation as a way to give back to the community. Today, the Foundation actively works to improve the social and economic well-being of local communities. The Foundation accomplishes this by funding nonprofit organizations and supporting community involvement by eBay employees. Since its inception, eBay Foundation has contributed more than $16 million to nonprofit organizations.
Why is eBay Foundation doing this?
The Community Gives campaign is eBay Foundation’s 2008 signature initiative. We realize we have the unique ability to harness the passion of the eBay Community to make positive change in the world. We’re teaming that passion with Foundation resources to create change through three nonprofit organizations we all care about.
How much is eBay Foundation giving?
eBay Foundation is kicking off the Community Gives campaign with a seed grant of $1 million. Then the Foundation will add $1 for each person who gives during the campaign, up to $100,000. All eBay Foundation funds will be divided equally among the three nonprofit organizations.
Which nonprofits will receive the money?
First Book, Best Friends Animal Society and Oxfam will receive funds from the Community Gives campaign. First Book gives children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Best Friends is working to bring about a time when homeless, unwanted animals are no longer being destroyed in shelters, and when every healthy companion animal can be guaranteed a good life in a caring home. Oxfam is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty. While these organizations differ widely in their missions and activities, they share a strong, enduring commitment to making the world a better place.
How were the nonprofit organizations chosen?
eBay Foundation wanted to choose causes that are important to the eBay Community as a whole. So we talked with a sample of active eBay Community members and looked at eBay Giving Works to see which causes were already being earmarked by eBay sellers for donations. Once we narrowed down the list, we looked for organizations that have tangible positive impact in several local communities around the country or the world. We closely reviewed their history and accomplishments, their fiscal responsibility and strength, their impact on issues, and their rankings on public charity standards. First Book, Best Friends Animal Society, and Oxfam easily meet and exceed all of these criteria.
Why should I participate?
One hundred percent of your donation will benefit a worthy nonprofit and the inspiring cause that it serves. Additionally, by giving together we can have more impact than giving alone. The more of you who give, the more eBay Foundation will give!

How do I donate?
It’s easy to make a donation with PayPal. Just click the Donate button on any page of this website. You can also donate with eBay Giving Works, the dedicated program for charity listings on eBay, by clicking on the Buy/Sell button. You will then have the option of listing an item on eBay and donating 10% or more of its final sale price to one of the three nonprofits or buying an item listed for one of the charities to help make the seller’s donation possible.
What is PayPal?
PayPal is the safer, easier way to pay and get paid online. The service allows anyone to pay in any way they prefer, including through credit cards, bank accounts, buyer credit or account balances, without sharing financial information. PayPal has quickly become a global leader in online payment solutions. PayPal was founded in 1998 and acquired by eBay in 2002.
What is eBay Giving Works?
eBay Giving Works is the dedicated program for charity listings on eBay. You can list an item and donate between 10% and 100% of its final sale price to a certified nonprofit organization (there is a $5 minimum donation if the item sells). Nonprofits can also sell items to raise funds. Buyers make it all possible when they purchase items marked by the blue and yellow ribbon icon. And it works.... Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes, your donation is tax deductible as permitted by law. You will receive a receipt from the nonprofit organization you choose.
Who receives my donation?
Your donation will go directly to the nonprofit organization you choose.
What if I don’t have a PayPal account?
Opening a PayPal account is easy. You can create one while donating. Just click any of the Donate buttons on this website, complete the donor information, click Submit, and you will be redirected to PayPal where you can instantly create your account.
Can I pay by credit card?
You can use Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express to pay with PayPal. When you pay with PayPal, your credit card number is in never exposed to the merchant.
Can I send in a check or money order?
The Community Gives campaign is not set up to accept checks or money orders. If you would like to use a check or money order to donate to one of the selected nonprofit organizations, please visit the organization’s website for more information.
Can I participate in this campaign if I live outside of the U.S.?
We welcome donors from around the world and hope the Community Gives campaign will be global, just like eBay. However, the nonprofit organizations will only provide tax receipts as required by the IRS in the United States

These organizations are great! How can I help spread the word?
Click the “Tell A Friend” link at the top of any Community Gives page and you’ll find multiple ways you can spread the word. You can send an email message to your friends, add a banner to your email signature or download PayPal giving widgets that you can add to your website, your blog, your MySpace page, and just about anywhere you have a presence on the web.
What portion of my donation will go to the nonprofit I choose?
One hundred percent! eBay and PayPal are waiving all donation-related fees to ensure that 100% of your donation will go to the nonprofit you choose.
